My son’s Scout Group (2nd Bracknell) had their annual summer camp at the Gloucestershire County Scouting Centre, Cranham, from Saturday August 7th to Saturday August 14th. |
|
As some of the other Scout leaders are also licensed (David 2E0XDF, Justin M3XJF and Nathaniel M3XNF), I decided to join them for the week, and to take along my TS140S HF transceiver and 20/40m trapped dipole. |
|
My home for the week! The portable mast supported the 20/40m trapped dipole, a colinear for 2m/70cm and, courtesy of the Venture Scouts, the Jolly Roger flag! |

Operating position when it was raining (most of the time).... ... and when it wasn’t raining. Mike (G4KFK) on the left, David (2E0XDF) on the right). |

The site location was 51º 49’ 19” North, 0º 8’ 52” West. QRA IO81WT Unfortunately both the site and the weather were not on our side! The site was surrounded on all sides by hills and very tall pine trees. We could work three repeaters on 2m. 70cm was completely dead. On HF, we heard USA, Canada, South Africa and Australia, though we only worked stations in Europe. Here’s the logbook: |

Of course, it wasn’t all radio. Above, the results of the quiz night. Below, Alan and I judge the Cubs’ Banquet Night. Bottom: Group photograph. |
